Kenny and Grandma really outdid themselves with Rory’s birthday cake this year. They started working on it around 6pm Friday, stayed up until 3am, and finally finished it the next afternoon at 1:30. Whew!
Kenny modeled the cake after the huge digger that Rory got from Grandma and Grandpa, and darn it if it didn’t turn out looking just like that digger. Kenny even sprinkled crushed chocolate sandwich cookies around the base to make it look like the digger was working in dirt. Amazing and so very impressive. I think my favorite part were the Kit Kat tracks.
With the two of them handling the cake, I took care of everything else. Nola and Nopsi came over on Friday and helped me. Nopsi blew up balloons and hung up the crepe paper backdrop, while Nola and I cleaned and straightened up. We pilfered a number of Rory’s trucks to use as decorations, and I also brought out the felt road that I used for Riley’s second birthday. I filled the four dump trucks on the road with veggie sticks, grapes, M&Ms, and pretzel sticks. I also made mini crescent dogs, and Nola supplied a platter of cookies.
I printed out lots of trucks and we taped them up all over the dining room in one big truck parade. It came out SO awesome. And I made new birthday subway art, as well as conducted Rory’s very first birthday interview. My favorite answers were his best friend and how he described himself. Too cute.
I was very happy with the way everything turned out, and Rory seemed fairly pleased too. Party recap coming up next!
