Sleepy Sprout, Part Fifteen

Like I did for my last post in 2014, let’s end the year with another round of sleepy pictures.

First up, the Sleepy Sprouts.

I took more than 7000 pictures in 2015 and posted almost 200 times, including 50 videos. It was a great year, but I’m ready to see what 2016 has in store for us.

Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone!

School Days: K Second Nine Weeks {Riley}

Riley’s second nine weeks of kindergarten were just as busy as his first. I can’t believe his school year is half over.

In ELA, they completed 5 more SuperKids units: Lily, Icky, Tic/Tac/Toc, Frits, and Ettabetta. They did lots of centers and activities associated with the first letters of the SuperKids’ names.

They did a lot with their wacky words, and they also learned more spelling words and had 5 more spelling tests. Riley is a good speller. He sounds each letter out and blends the sounds together to figure out how to spell the word. His handwriting still needs practice though!

They also started “smartie spelling” and have done lots of activities and worksheets practicing that. It’s a very interesting teaching tool.

In math, they learned about numbers 20-30, measurement, classifying objects into different categories, data/graphing/probability, and two dimensional shapes.

In religion, they learned about “forgiveness as an act of love,” All Saints Day, prayer, the rosary, Advent, and that Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season.

They did another fun food project for Thanksgiving: they made teepees out of ice cream cones, icing, sprinkles, and pretzels. However, Riley refused to bite the end off of his cone so he didn’t get to stick his pretzels out of the top. Wonk potatoes.

They got a visit from St. Nicholas on December 4. They each left a shoe outside of their classroom and when they went out to get them later, they discovered a treat bag full of goodies. (Shhhh…Rory helped me with this.)

They did a lot of Christmas related projects and took turns being “Elf of the Day” during the last two weeks of school in December.

They had a class elf, whom they named Willie. They journaled using their smartie spelling every day about where Willie was in their classroom. So cute!

They had a fun pajama day on December 11 and also got a visit from Santa! Then they sang Christmas carols with Mrs. Allison’s dad on December 16.

They have learned a total of 42 wacky words, more than 75 spelling words, number words zero through ten, numbers 0-30, their birthdays, and their phone numbers. All of that was assessed on their 2nd quarter report card, which we haven’t received yet.

Riley’s behavior was better this quarter, although he did get on yellow a few times. Our October conference with Mrs. Allison went well though; she said he’s doing great.

I can’t wait to see how he does the rest of his kindergarten year!
