These school recap posts are so huge that it’s always hard for me to know where to begin. Riley hasn’t slowed down in his PK4 year, so there’s lots to tell y’all about the last 9 weeks. Here we go!
They’ve studied the letters “Ff” through “Kk.” They did lots of activities with frogs, fish, goats, grapes, houses, igloos, jaguars, jellybeans, kites, and koalas.
Riley is still struggling with his writing, but he continues to make progress.
They studied the colors yellow, green, and purple.
In reading, they finished talking about La Tortuga and then started a new story called The Elves and the Shoemaker and did many things associated with it. They then started a nursery rhyme unit, Jingles, Rhymes, and Songs.
In math, they studied the numbers 6 through 10. They also learned about ovals, squares, and solid shapes like cylinders, spheres, and cubes. They talked about various positions as well, such as above, below, top, bottom, etc.
In religion, they learned about the rosary, the church, making good choices versus wrong choices (sins), Jesus and stories of his life, and Advent.
We got Riley’s school picture back just after I posted about his first 9 weeks. I like it!
They did lots of fun activities the week of Halloween.
They talked about Thanksgiving and what they are thankful for this year. And they did lots of Thanksgiving activities and crafts involving Indians, Pilgrims, and what the holiday is all about. Riley also brought in cans of corn and green beans to donate to our local food bank.
Riley recently brought home lots of papers that he “colored” with a pencil. When I asked him why he didn’t use any of his crayons, he said he had a new Christmas pencil that was given to him by his principal and that’s what he wanted to use. So sweet.
They decorated their class Christmas tree, did many Christmas activities and crafts, celebrated the Feast of St. Nicholas, met their classroom elf (whom they voted to name Justin Jr. Riley told me his suggestion was the Abominable Snowman. I can’t imagine why that wasn’t picked.), colored an elf with their big buddies, made their parents a special Christmas ornament, and attended the school band Christmas concert. Ms. Amelie told me at pick-up that afternoon that Riley didn’t sleep during naptime but totally fell asleep during the concert. Too bad she didn’t get a Sleepy Bean picture!
He is doing a little bit better with eating his lunch at school. And he has only gotten one or two timeouts, so his behavior is better too. He still plays with Claire and Jack at recess and loves center time.
He doesn’t like to talk to me about his days when I pick him up, but I’m attempting to instate a rule that he has to tell me two things (center time and recess don’t count) before he can have a snack at home. We’ll see how that goes.
Today is his first official day of the Christmas vacation. He’s off for two weeks, returning for the second half of the school year on January 5.
It’s going to go by so very fast.
