School Days: Fourth Nine Weeks {Riley}

I can’t believe I’m just getting around to posting about Riley’s final weeks of first grade. How is it June already???

In ELA, they discussed long “i” words, point of view, “see/saw,” adding “-ies,” “-ed,” and “-ing” endings to words, adverbs, commas in a series of verbs, main idea and supporting details, compound words, and root words. They also learned about common and proper nouns and open and closed syllables.

They had a fun week before Easter break, focusing on fresh reads and interactive writing centers (building a Lego rocket, creating their own lunch menu, and writing friendly notes to classmates). And they completed a “What’s in My Egg?” project, where they had to write three clues to help their classmates guess what was in their egg. (Riley of course put a Lego minifigure in his.) After break, they discussed “bossy R” (ar, er, ir, or, and ur words) and irregular plural nouns. They were tested on 5 main ELA units.

They also took three more spelling tests and were evaluated on their high frequency words. I feel like he took more spelling tests than this, but these three are all I found in his stack of papers. He aced ALL of his spelling tests this year!

In math, they read and made different charts and graphs, learned about non-standard units of measurement, and started telling time.

In religion, they learned about Lent, Jesus’ resurrection, and Easter. They also made cards for the 2nd graders before their First Communion.

I loved seeing the creative drawings that Riley brought home the last nine weeks.

The firsties put together a special cookbook for their moms for Mother’s Day. Each student had to choose their favorite recipe to include in the book. Riley chose my red beans and rice. :)

Their last week of school was, not surprisingly, full of fun. They had pizza for lunch one day and ice cream treats another afternoon. They watched movies, played games, and spent one whole day outside. They also had a camping day, complete with pajamas, sleeping bags, flashlights, and s’mores. I think this was Riley’s favorite week of first grade!

Riley also got a very special treat: Claire was the teacher experience gala auction winner, and she chose Riley and Joelle to join her for a Chick-Fil-A lunch with Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Mac in their classroom. So fun!

I am so very glad Riley had Mrs. Smith this year. I knew we couldn’t go wrong with whomever we got (Mrs. Mac is awesome too!), but I have loved getting to know Amy. And I know Riley loved having her for his teacher. Sadly, she is not coming back to SCR next year, but it’s for a very good reason. She finally gets to move to the same state that her husband is stationed in! We will miss seeing her around the halls of SCR, and I’m sad Rory won’t get the chance to have her too, but we wish her the best of luck in her new adventure with Mr. Philip in Georgia.
