Rory’s First Rice Cereal

Since Rory’s next doctor’s appointment isn’t until he’s close to five months old, I called Dr. N’s office about starting him on rice cereal before we actually see her.

She said to start out giving him 1-2 tablespoons once a day for about a week and then increase to twice a day for another week and then to three times a day.

His very first feeding took place on the McFs last day in town, so they actually were present for both Riley’s and Rory’s first tastes of rice cereal. And Ita took the all-important pictures on both occasions…..thanks, Ita!

Rory started out eating very similarly to Riley, almost assuredly thinking, “What the heck is this stuff???” I eventually resorted to using my hand to try and smear the cereal into his mouth.

He made some pretty funny faces throughout the process, but he seemed to pick up on the concept of spoon-feeding faster than his older brother did.

That’s not to say he wasn’t a complete mess when we were done…..

…..because he most definitely was.

Afterwards, just like Riley, he got a bath in the kitchen sink, and then he was so completely mellow. Eating from a spoon sure can tire a four-month-old out.

I have been using the Bumbo for all of his subsequent feedings and it has worked really well. He also doesn’t get nearly as messy as he did during those first few feedings.

Although, if his fingers find their way into his mouth, the drool and cereal mixture inevitably gets spread around a bit.

And we were really hoping the rice cereal would help control the spit up issue but…..

…..it unfortunately has not. Crazy fries.
