Aunt Erin is a teacher, so that means she has lots of free time in the summer. Riley and I decided she needed some company a couple of days ago, so we went over to her house to have a lunch playdate. It was also a good opportunity for me to reintroduce Riley to Doug the dog and Fate the cat.
Typically, Fate wanted nothing to do with him and immediately returned to her hiding place under Erin’s bed the moment I released her.
Doug was a slightly different story. He seemed extremely curious about Riley from the moment we walked through the door, but he was very wary of him. He also acted a little skittish at times, though understandably so. Riley is still very much in the frantic arm waving stage of life, and Doug is just plain not used to that.
Although you never know how Uncle Jeff acts when no one is watching.
We probably could have just let Riley hold Doug’s leash the whole time we were there, and he would have been perfectly content. I think Aunt Erin is now looking forward to Riley actually being able to use the leash (instead of gnawing on it) to take Doug for a walk.
There were a few times when Riley would crawl toward the other room, stop, turn around, and look for Doug to be following him, which he wasn’t. It was so cute. Riley seemed confused that something close to his size didn’t really want to play with him. Although at one point, Doug did sit by the back door looking pitiful, waiting to be let in. However, once he was allowed back inside, he continued to keep his distance from the small human crawling around in his territory.
Doug also apparently gets very jealous, so Erin couldn’t hold Riley as much as she wanted to while we were there. This could become problematic when they eventually decide to start a family…..ultimately, though, Doug did pretty well around Riley, so maybe there’s hope yet.
Thanks, Aunt Erin, for letting us come over and play. We had such a good time, and we can’t wait for our next visit.
I am determined to get that dog of yours used to and very comfortable around little ones!

Such great pix! Aunt E. loves her some RileyBean!
What a great post. Loved seeing Riley with more animals. Good thing he had patient Jem to ease him into the world of pets. Doug's a slightly different animal though. Ha.
Great pictures, again! It was fun...come and keep me company anytime you'd like. I think Doug will do fine once he gets used to Riley, so that means he needs to come around more. :)
Have not touched a computer since last Saturday (mini vacation), and it has been so much fun catching up on your family!! Can't wait to see that boy again ... my gosh, no telling what he will be doing by Thanksgiving!
