Rory’s birthday falls on Pi Day (March 14), and this year was epic. Why?
Okay, math nerdiness aside, we had a great time celebrating the little one’s second birthday. Riley decided that we should have doughnuts for the birthday breakfast, so he and I went to Tastee that morning and brought some back home. Riley picked out a special one covered in green frosting for himself, and Rory got some blueberry and some plain glazed. Everyone was happy.
When it was time to get dressed for the day, I put Rory in a special shirt I had made for him. I took the green t-shirt he wore as Shaggy for Halloween and painted “Kiss me…..it’s my birthday” on it so he could wear it to the Irish Channel parade that afternoon. It came out SO cute, if I do say so myself.
Both sets of grandparents came over just before noon to give the birthday boy his gifts…..
…..and after we ate lunch, we were off to the parade. The Irish Channel parade has been a favorite of mine for a number of years. Lots of our guy friends ride on a float and a few others are part of a marching group. We usually watch the parade with a big group and this year was no exception. We had so many people out there, both for the parade and for Rory’s birthday.
During a break in the action, we busted out the Mississippi mud pie I had made for Rory (and in honor of Pi Day), sang “Happy Birthday” to him, and doled out pieces to those who were interested. Rory wanted nothing to do with his birthday pie. He in fact pushed it away.
There was a lady standing near us that heard us singing. She came over afterwards, announced that it was her birthday too, and could she get a picture with the birthday boy? Fine, except that she had a huge green wig on that scared the bejesus out of Rory (you can barely see her in the top left corner of the first picture below). Poor thing. However, shortly after that, someone else came up to us and gave Rory $1 for his birthday. You gotta love this city.
Not long after that, Scott and Sean arrived with their marching group. We had a great time dancing, chatting, and drinking with them until they had to move on. I’m not sure they could have had more fun walking three miles in kilts and tuxedo jackets, carrying flowers, beads, and beers. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Once Scott and Sean had moved on, the girls amused themselves by using a string of beads to jump rope…..
…..until the floats finally started making their appearance. Our friends were on Float #3, so they were near the beginning. I was so excited to show Riley their float: a giant Lego man was on the front of it. I scored two cabbages, some beads, and a stuffed animal from the guys. Thanks y’all!
Rory, meanwhile, loved another float, one with a big Mickey on the front of it. Of course.
I think both boys were pleasantly surprised at all of the food that the riders were throwing. It seemed like Riley was eating something throughout the entire parade. We even came home with Ramen noodles.
Of course we had to stay to watch the clean-up process…..
…..but then we headed home after a long day. We picked up dinner, fed and bathed the boys, and settled down. Kenny and I also gave Rory his birthday present, a twilight turtle of his own. (We’re planning on giving the boys a bigger, joint present at the beginning of the summer. Possibly.)
What a day. It was busy, but it was so much fun. And I think Rory enjoyed himself, which is all that matters.
However, this was just the beginning of an insane time for us. Kenny was out of town for work most of last week, Rory had his two-year check-up with Dr. N, Riley had two big events at school (which I helped with), Rory’s party was this past Saturday, along with Touch-a-Truck, and our annual friends’ Easter egg hunt was Sunday. And yes, it was as exhausting as it sounds.
Lots of fun updates coming your way this week!
