School Days: PK4 Zoo Field Trip {Rory}

Rory went on his first official school field trip on April 20, to the Audubon Zoo. I chaperoned him and his friend Rex; Dana, Colin, Heidi, and Brennan hung out with us too. It was such a pretty day; we have really lucked out with the weather lately, except for that big storm that ruined our crawfish boil.

We left from school around 9:15 Friday morning, and Rory got to ride on a school bus for the first time. So fun!

When we arrived at the zoo, we were just one of LOTS of school groups. It was SO. CROWDED. The kids had their morning snacks before we went in, and then we gathered by the elephant fountain to take a group picture.

Then we were off! We let the boys take the lead and just followed ran along behind them. We saw the monkeys first, then walked over to the new play area by the jaguars. After that we bypassed the swamp and went to the giraffes and the petting zoo. They spent some time on Monkey Hill, watched construction on the new lion exhibit, and finally rounded things out in the reptile house. All in just one hour. Whew.

We met back up with the rest of the class near the gift shop. The boys compared their purchases and showed everything to Mrs. Sue. Then they loaded back up onto the bus for the short trip to the Fly for our picnic lunch.

A movie was unfortunately filming at the Fly. Many of the parking spaces were taken, and a huge catering area was set up right where Mrs. Sue usually likes to have lunch. So we went a little further and found an alternative spot under a big tree across from the soccer fields. There was also a playground, upon which Rory busted his upper lip on one of the slides after only 10 minutes. Lots of fellow moms came to my aid; his lip bled a lot, and there was concern he had damaged his front teeth. But he calmed down and we determined that it was just a busted lip. Sweet boy.

Per Mrs. Dana’s instructions, he held ice to his lip on the way home, but not for very long. He completely zoned out; he had had a long day!

Despite the injury (which went down fairly quickly), we had a really great day. Love going on field trips with my two boys.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

French Quarter Festival

Like we did last year, the four of us caught a streetcar down to French Quarter Festival on its last day. It was absolutely beautiful out; we all actually needed jackets!

Rory fell asleep on me on our way down there, and Riley cozied up to me as well. Then they both insisted on being carried when we arrived on Canal Street. The ride tired them out, but they perked up when we got back out into the sunshine.

We walked over to Woldenberg Park and found a small patch of grass in front of the Abita Stage. We didn’t stay out there too long, but Kenny and I each had a couple of beers, and we heard a tiny bit of the Dixie Cups and Raw Oyster Cult.

We caught another streetcar back to our car and then went to Nola and Nopsi’s for Sunday dinner.

7. On the day we were supposed to have our annual crawfish boil, a really strong storm moved through. Kenny spent much of it pressure washing the porches…..

…..while the boys and I played outside in the puddles when it finally slacked off a bit. Fingers crossed the weather is good for our alternate boil date!
