Last Saturday was our annual crawfish boil. We were afraid we wouldn’t be able to host a boil this year: there was talk of a decreased supply and more expensive prices because of the unusually numerous cold spells we’ve had this spring.
However, we decided even if we couldn’t do crawfish we would have everyone over anyway for a BBQ. Luckily, though, prices dropped significantly enough after Easter, so we ordered the ‘bugs on Thursday and went off on a trip to Sam’s on Friday to get everything we would need for our big partay. Rory helped us shop!
The boil day dawned a bit overcast with no chance of rain. Excellent. We got going early with prep, people started arriving around noon, and the first batch was out on the tables at 1:30.
We had 60 people in attendance, 40 adults and 20 kids. Holy moly. Kenny boiled five batches of 200 pounds total, and the crawfish were delicious. We estimated the amount pretty perfectly, ending up with only about 10 pounds leftover, enough to make crawfish etouffee for dinner earlier this week and still have some for crawfish omelets one morning. Winning.
And Rory finally got his first taste of crawfish. He liked it!
We also did a mini photo shoot with Rory and Kate since they were both wearing crab outfits. Cutie patootie cousins!
The amount of kids running around all day was fantastic. They had so much fun playing in the backyard with the water table, slide, big blue ball, and bouncy (thanks again, Bridget!). The slices of fresh watermelon that Steve and Kelli brought were also a big hit with the wee ones. I think it’s safe to say that they all slept really well that night.
As I was telling Scott and Kat sometime that afternoon, this event is an incredible amount of work for Kenny and me, but it is so freaking worth it. We love being able to get all of our friends together for a really fun and relaxed afternoon.
For those of y’all that made it to our boil this year, we thank you. For those that didn’t (and there weren’t many!), y’all come on over next year, ya hear?
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
