Riley was at school the week before last for 1st Grade Readiness Camp. He did the same kind of thing last summer before entering kindergarten; it’s where he met Mrs. Allison for the first time. However, the 1st grade teachers don’t actually put on the 1st grade camp. Mrs. Allison and Ms. Jen do! Riley was excited to hang out with his old teacher all week long.
They did lots of stuff in preparation for starting 1st grade. They practiced their wacky words, played phonics games, discussed the difference between nouns and verbs, and did lots of reading using different techniques to make it fun. They did a few fun writing projects as well. They also reviewed recognizing and writing numbers 20-30, counted by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, and practiced simple addition and subtraction.
I had no idea that going to Hollywood was on his bucket list. And I love that if he had a magic wand he would turn his house into 3 toy stores so he could get toys whenever he wanted. Very creative!
Riley’s handwriting still needs lots of improvement, and he is writing some of his numbers backwards, even though we have been practicing at home this summer! I’ve made it a point to have him do some writing, some math, and some reading just about every week. He has read 12 books on his summer reading list, most of which we’ve borrowed from the library. He has also written sentences for me, and we’ve been reviewing his wacky words. And he’s filled out about half of his Star Wars math workbook that Matthew gave him for his birthday. No more true summer breaks for the wonk potatoes; learning is happening year-round now!
Riley liked getting to spend five straight days with Mrs. Allison; we’re really going to miss having her as his teacher!
But I know for a fact that the two first grade teachers at SCR are stellar, so I’m not worried at all. We’ll find out who Riley has (and Rory too!) on Monday!

You do such a good job with these posts! I love seeing his progress, and reading what his wonky mind wants.
