The day after Halloween, once the kids were awake and shook off the remnants of sugar, we packed up and headed to the farm again. (Of course, we did get doughnuts on the way.) It was Grandpa’s birthday, and Kenny and Uncle Steve decided to help out more with building the dock as a birthday present.
I spent the entire ride up there petrified that Rory was going to throw up again. But he didn’t. We made it up there without any incidents, thank goodness.
We headed to the tractor shed first to get supplies for the day. The boys ran around and played in the yard, trying to keep warm, while Kenny loaded up. The temperature dropped a lot overnight and it was quite cold up there that morning.
When we got to the campsite, we found it was already occupied. Lots of the cows were in the area, checking things out. This also meant we had to be extremely careful where we stepped the rest of the day. But that didn’t prevent Riley from falling in cow poop before we left. Of course not. But at least he didn’t fall in the pond again.
The guys got straight to work while the rest of us watched the kids play. It had warmed up by then and ended up being a really nice day to spend outside.
Everyone took a break for lunch and Rory got fussy a bit after that. Riley and Zac were perfectly content working in their shop (two sawhorses pushed together), so I made a little bed for Rory in the back of the car, climbed in there with him, and got him to sleep in less than 5 minutes. I shut the back door, popped open the glass, and he slept for about an hour and a half. Sweetness.
The girls helped a bit with the dock work, too. All three of us turned wrenches and used the mallet…..
…..and I even got to use the big drill. Piece of cake.
Overall, we had a really nice day. The guys got a total of 6 new boards in place, which thrilled Grandpa to no end. He was so delighted to spend his birthday working in one of his favorite places surrounded by his family.
And the little one didn’t throw up on the way home, either. Winning.

Very impressive! A better gift than a pitchfork?
