Video Monday: (Lack of) Cake Smash {Rory’s First Birthday}

A little over an hour into Rory’s first birthday party, Kenny and I decided it was time to purposefully destroy his carefully created sock monkey cake. Remembering how much fun it was to watch Riley dig into his, I was excited to see what Rory would do with his very own smash cake.

We gathered behind the dining room table for family photos, snapped one of the crowd facing us (a great way to remember who was there), and then sang to the birthday boy.

Rory’s face was priceless. He had no idea what was happening. It appeared he was on the verge of completely losing it throughout the whole song, but luckily he didn’t. Yet.

Once the candle was blown out, Kenny decapitated the poor monkey and put his head on Rory’s plate. Meanwhile, Grandma and I were getting Rory situated in the highchair so he would be all ready to dig in. But that’s not exactly what happened.

I think Rory was very overwhelmed by the excitement of the day, compounded by the fact that he is currently teething. Oh, and his morning nap wasn’t long enough so he was probably also overtired. That’s just too much for a one-year-old to handle, so he broke down and decided he didn’t want anything to do with the sock monkey head sitting on a plate in front of him.

Can’t say I blame him. It did look pretty creepy.

We did manage to sneak a few tastes of icing into his mouth, but he didn’t appear to like it very much. I also took his hand and pushed it into the cake, but he also didn’t appear to like having his hands all messy either. Riley, on the other hand, was perfectly content to set up shop right in front of the cake and eat his fill. No surprise there.

Kenny put Rory down for a second nap shortly after the smash cake fail, and we tried again when he woke up later that afternoon. He slept great, the house had emptied and was quiet again, and we figured it would go much better. Not so much.

All he wanted was the plastic fork and his bottle.

Oh well. Much like with a three-and-a-half-year-old, you can’t really reason with a one-year-old. And if he doesn’t want cake, who am I to force him to eat it? I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities for him to gorge himself on sugary things in the years to come.

Huge thanks to DB for taking videos during the singing of “Happy Birthday” and the attempted cake smash. Here’s a montage of how things actually went down.

Happy Monday!
