Two Months {Rory}

Rory is two months old today. He sees Dr. N again on Thursday, so I won’t have any official stats until then. He’s out of newborn clothes and diapers as of a week or so ago. He’s growing so fast that it’s already hard for me to remember how little he was when we first met him!

Here are some things I’d like to remember about his second month:

  • He’s now solely on formula and eating between 4 and 5 ounces at each feeding. He eats every 3 or 4 hours during the day and goes a bit longer at night. He is quite the messy eater.
  • Spit up is definitely still an issue. He doesn’t spit up after every single feeding, but he does so more often than not. And a lot of the time it’s a fairly significant amount. He also sometimes spits up an hour or two after he’s finished eating, and the milk appears to be completely undigested. Strange. I’ve mentioned this to Dr. N, who said he’s just a spitter, but I’ll talk to her more about it when we actually see her later this week.
  • His daytime sleep is getting a bit better. I’m really trying to limit his periods of wakefulness to under two hours, and that seems to be working. However, last week Grandma was here to help, so we’ll see how things go when I’m on my own with both boys again. He still seems to prefer being held while he sleeps, and we really need to break him of that. He’ll be completely out in our arms and then wake up the instant we put him down.
  • His nighttime sleep is progressing okay. We’ve been putting him down around 9:30 or 10pm fairly consistently for a while. He used to wake up around 2am and then again at 5 or 6am to eat but lately he’s been sleeping until 3:30am or so and then again until 7:30 or 8am. Sometimes he doesn’t settle as easily but for the most part he’s doing okay.
  • However, the past few nights have been a challenge, with him being fussy after his last bottle, not settling until close to 11pm, and then waking up before 2am and again around 5am. I don’t like the regression one bit. The problem is that he gets fussy around the time Riley goes to bed and most of the time all we can do is hold him and try to get him to sleep. But then he sleeps so long he doesn’t always want to go right back down after his last feeding and gets fussy again. We may try an earlier bedtime sometime soon but I’m just not sure he’s ready for that. We shall see.
  • He’s testing out the strength of those chubby little legs of his, especially when he’s over someone’s shoulder being burped. He pushes with his legs like he wants to launch himself into the air.
  • We have not been doing tummy time very often on account of all of the spit up issues, but I’m sure he’ll get more opportunities soon.
  • His hands have made their way into his mouth a few times and he sucks away on his fists. And he will often show me his tongue if I show him mine first.
  • He is still enjoying his baths and is calm throughout the whole process the majority of the time. We bathe him every other night, but I’m sure it will become a part of his nightly bedtime routine before too long.
  • He’s been smiling at us as of week 7. I just love seeing his dimples come out. He’s started “talking” a bit, too.
  • He’s really focusing on everything around him now. He still likes looking at our faces, the fans, and anything we dangle in front of his face, like our fingers or some of his toys.

So my house is a wreck, we’re down to our last few freezer meals, and we’re sleep deprived. But we have this cute little boy to show for it.

I am looking at the picture of him and Riley in the chair, framed here on my desk, and the difference in Rory from that time until now is AMAZING. He IS growing up; he WILL sleep through the night and better during the day; it WILL all get better, I promise.
