Two Month Check-Up with Dr. N {Rory}

Kenny and I took Rory to see Dr. N last Thursday. He weighed in at 12 pounds, 9 ounces and measured 22.5 inches long with a head circumference of 15.5 inches. He checked out just fine and got four vaccinations: oral rotavirus and three shots (which covered DTaP, PCV13, polio, Hib, and hepatitis B). He of course cried when he got stuck but calmed down fairly quickly.

We talked a lot with Dr. N about Rory’s behavior, mood, and disposition for the first two months of his life. After listening closely, Dr. N decided to give us two cans of soy formula to take home and try out for three days. If he’s got an issue with lactose, this could be our solution to his fussiness and general unsettled state. If the soy didn’t seem to help, she also wrote a prescription for Zantac in case reflux is the problem.

He had the soy formula Friday through yesterday. And while he did seem to exhibit happier behavior, Kenny and I both agreed that he still seemed unsettled at times. (He also started spitting up again; that issue had actually gotten better a few days before we switched formulas.) So we filled the Zantac and started him on his first dose last night. It could take up to a week to really work, so we’re playing the waiting game until then.

Rory did get his first cold last week, thanks to Riley and me being under the weather as well. He had head and chest congestion, with a stuffy nose and a little cough. It seems to have cleared up at this point, but it did make feedings a bit of a challenge since he couldn’t breathe all that well with the bottle in his mouth. Also, because of the stuffiness, we slept him in the rock-n-play as opposed to his bed so his head would be more elevated. Dr. N advised us to continue doing this if reflux reveals itself to be an issue.

Dr. N also said that he may just be a fussy baby, in which case there’s nothing she can fix and we’ll just have to ride it out. But she said he’s gaining weight and generally very healthy, so she’s not overly concerned about him. That reassured me, but I just want him to be happy.

So on our game of trial and error goes. I’m hoping that as he gets older he’ll grow out of whatever issue he’s having, or hopefully the Zantac will start making a difference. As of now, Kenny and I are just taking things as they come, one day at a time.

And I am so glad I have that man by my side. Because I could not do it without him.
