Since I’m one of the room moms for Rory’s class this year, I was partially responsible for decorating kindergarten’s fair booth. The theme of the fair was “The World Is Our Oyster {Fest},” so it was pretty open-ended as far as what we could do. Lots of people collaborated, but it was Kenny’s idea and Nopsi’s hard work that made it happen. We created a world skyline for the top of the booth and two school buses (one for each kinder class) for the bottom. I freaking love how it all came out. Bonus points if you can name all 12 monuments!
Unfortunately, something we had not previously experienced on fair weekend came to pass this year: rain. Lots of it, during the day on Friday. It prevented us from decorating that morning like we usually do. I wasn’t about to risk all of our hard work getting ruined!
Rory’s class was able to do their final fair dance practice on the big stage early on Friday morning, but Riley’s class had to move to the gym because of the weather. I was glad to help out with this fun activity for both boys again this year, especially because it was Riley’s last official year of fair dance!
We almost decided not to take the boys on Friday night, but they were desperate to get out there and start riding rides. The Funky Beans opened, but the second band cancelled. Attendance was way down and not at all like we were used to for the first night. It was drizzly and rainy and somewhat miserable, but the skies cleared up eventually, and we managed. Then I worked the last shift of the night with Dana, Diana, Heidi, and Terah.
Thankfully, Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day. Nopsi, Kenny, and I headed out to school at 8am to finally get the kinder booth decorated. Kristin, my co, and Laceyann (the other class’s room mom) met us out there, and we got it all done in under an hour. It looked AMAZING.
Riley’s class booth also turned out great: his room mom did a “Where in the World Is Mrs. Devenport’s Class?” theme and put all of the kids’ faces onto famous landmarks around the world. Riley was the Lincoln Memorial!
Kenny and I went back home to change, grab the boys, and head right back out. Rory’s fair dance was at noon and Riley’s was at 12:45. I took Rory to meet his class, get their costumes on, and take a group pic. They danced to “Hello to All the Children of the World,” a sweet little song about how to say “hello” in different languages. Kristin made the kids’ shirts: they each had a globe on the front with “hello” in a different language above it. And we ordered world flag bandanas for them to wear as well. They looked so darn cute.
Despite remembering the fair dance debacle last year, I wasn’t worried about Rory. He’s really grown up a lot since last year; I knew he would be great up on stage. And he was! He smiled the whole time, did great, and had a ball.
Everyone was so proud of him!
Once Rory had been properly praised for his performance, I took Riley to meet his class. They danced to “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac, and they wore colorful fringed t-shirt vests and groovy sunglasses. They looked totally awesome, man.
Riley, in his own special way, did a great job too. He says he doesn’t like doing fair dance, and he never does the moves exactly right, but it looked like he had fun up there. Especially at the very end.
Once Riley came off stage, we got the fam together for a pic and then the boys were off and running.
Recap of the rest of the weekend coming up next!
