Kenny’s parents were married 50 years on June 1, and they decided to treat the family to a fun vacation to celebrate. Many options were tossed around but we ultimately ended up having a staycation right in NOLA. We rented a house off of Tchoupitoulas near Urban South Brewery for three nights, May 31 – June 3.
We made tacos for dinner Thursday night and settled into the house. Grandpa also told stories and shared memories about his 50+ years together with Grandma. Very cool hearing about their earlier days. The boys crashed hard this night!
The next day happened to be National Donut Day, so we went to nearby District Donuts to mark the occasion. Their donuts are very fancy: this day their offerings were all snoball flavors. Riley got spearmint and I got wedding cake. Rory only wanted chocolate milk, which was SO good.
We left District in search of more normal donuts. We ended up at Blue Dot Donuts, where they were unfortunately practically sold out. But we tried a few of what they had left.
After donuts, we went to the church where Grandma and Grandpa were married in 1968. We tried hard to get inside but it just didn’t work out. Still cool to see it, although the kids were super bored and hot. Then we picked up lunch from Frankie and Johnny’s and went back to the house to eat. Riley had red beans and rice while wearing his red beans and rice shirt!
Our next outing was to Mardi Gras World. We played tourists and took the guided tour of the warehouse where they design and build lots of the floats used in parades, as well as the Chick-Fil-A cows used on billboards throughout the country. Very interesting.
Friday night was our nice dinner out: Ralph’s on the Park. They even printed special menus just for us. We had a really nice meal, despite the boys getting very sleepy toward the end. I loved my Mayflowers cocktail (made with elderflower, creme de violette, vodka, lemon, and lime), and my steak tartare was delish. A very nice way to close out Grandma and Grandpa’s special day!
We had a leisurely Saturday morning and then took a short road trip to the Infinity Science Center in Mississippi. Very cool place, with lots of info about plants, space, tides, hurricanes, etc. But my two liked the huge area of big blue building blocks the best. They created a really impressive city!
We picked up 5 Happiness for dinner on the way home and enjoyed our last night together. We packed up the next morning, said goodbye to the staycation house, and headed back home.
Thanks so much for a great trip, Grandma and Grandpa!
