Last weekend was the official start of Oktoberfest in NOLA. Our whole family loves this festival, so Kenny and I decided to take the boys on opening night of the three-weekend party in Rivertown.
Dana, David, Claire, Colin, Diana, Jamey, and Alcee came out there with us, and we ran into some of my Jazzercise crew as well. Little Jackson was even dressed for the occasion. SO cute.
In no time at all the kids were fueled up with soft pretzels and juice, and they were running around blowing bubbles, dancing the chicken dance, and having a grand time. The adults just stood back and watched, sipping on frosty German beers and enjoying the sounds of local band Prost.
Then Alcee spotted someone she just had to follow: a woman dressed in a traditional German outfit that looked very much like the beloved Queen Elsa. I explained who the kids thought she was, and her friend starting singing Let It Go. Too funny.
The sun began to go down and the kids amused themselves by climbing up and jumping off of a lightpole. Meanwhile, all Rory wanted to do was run up and down the ramp leading to the ATM. Just like last year. But they abandoned everything when Kenny brought them popcorn to share.
Then Dana and I did something I’ve always wanted to do: compete in a beer stein holding contest! When they announced that the next contest would be starting soon, we raced up to the stage and got chosen to compete. Five guys and five girls participated. Dana and I came in first and second, respectively, out of the girls. We lasted very close to two minutes. This is way harder than it looks; those full steins were heavy!
As a prize for competing, we got to have the remaining beer left in our glasses and an Oktoberfest pitcher to carry it in. Score.
After our 2 minutes of fame onstage, we took the kids to the Kids Korner and to get their faces painted before we headed home. Riley’s dragon came out really cool looking; he was so proud of it.
Such a fun, fun night. The kids didn’t get into bed until almost 10pm, but we all had a great time. I’m quite sure we’ll end up back out at Oktoberfest again sometime this weekend. It’s just too good of a time not to go more than once.
Prost, y’all!
