School Days: PK4 Mardi Gras Parade

The annual SCR Mardi Gras parade rolled at 2pm on Friday afternoon. I dropped Riley and his float off at school that morning and he could hardly contain himself. I didn’t envy Ms. Amelie having to control a classroom full of excited kids until the parade started!

When Kenny, Rory, and I arrived in the afternoon, I snuck back to the loading area to check on Riley and make sure his lights were turned on. (They weren’t.) The kids were all in their floats and ready to go. They looked so excited. The boys were dressed as soccer players and the girls were dressed as Carnaval performers. So cute. Riley also made sure to walk over to Claire’s float to give her a flower before the parade started. Sweet boy.

Rory actually fell asleep in the car on the way to the parade, so Kenny held him until he woke up, which was just as the title banner came around the corner. Perfect timing, little one! Father Luis was the parade captain, part of the SCR band played Mardi Gras songs behind him, and more administrative staff marched behind them throwing beads and candy.

It was bright and sunny outside as the PK4 students rolled by in their wagon floats. So bright, in fact, that Riley’s lights were completely unnoticeable. Bummer.

But he didn’t care one bit. Ms. Amelie’s class was the last group, and when Riley spotted us, he started screeching and had a huge smile on his face. He was having a fantastic time.

We also saw lots of Riley’s friends, including Claire, Matthew, Sophia, and Jack. The Mini 610 Stompers were even there! And at the very end was a student dressed as a huge Valentine’s heart, a fire truck operator, and a one-man clean-up crew.

The parade did two laps and by the time we saw Riley again, he was completely out of throws. Lots of the kids were. I guess they got a little generous when distributing among the rest of the students; they passed by them first.

Ms. Amelie walked alongside her class, looking pretty cute herself. Can you figure out what her shirt says and what it means???

The parade disbanded in the back parking lot, so that’s where we went to pick Riley up when everything was finished. I snapped a quick picture of Riley with Ms. Amelie and then we couldn’t keep Rory from climbing into his seat in the wagon. He really wanted to be in there with his brother.

Such a fun day. We went to see Centurions that night and then had time for one last parade on Sunday before our Mardi Gras season was officially over. More tomorrow!
