Since he was sick on his actual birthday, Ms. Amanda let Riley bring in a special birthday treat to share with his classmates the next week. And since he missed school last Friday because we were on vacation (recap coming up soon), I decided Thursday would be a good treat day.
With Rory at home with Nola, I drove in the pouring rain to get five dozen Tastee donut holes at the birthday boy’s request and bring them to school. I had asked Ms. Amanda if I could be there for the little celebration, and she readily agreed.
I arrived a little before the kids sat down to their lunches, so I hung out in the back room while I waited. I found Riley’s place and noticed that he had a special birthday hat sitting next to his lunch. So cute.
Once all of the kids were seated, the teachers led them in their daily prayer. Riley looked so sweet with his hands folded in front of him.
After lunches were eaten and cleared away, it was donut time! We sang “Happy Birthday” first and gave Riley a big round of applause. I was super impressed that {most of} the kids waited until everyone had a donut before digging in…..they’re learning some manners.
I also noticed that the kids are very much used to their routine at school, even after only being there for a couple of weeks. Prayer, lunch, potty, nap. Riley was so focused on what he normally does every day that he ran into his classroom to lay on his mat without a backwards glance at me.
I snuck a quick peek at him and then took my leave. He’s had somewhat of a hard time going to school (update coming up next week), so I decided not to interrupt the beginning of his nap, even though Ms. Amanda told me on the way out that he was asking for me. However, I took comfort in the fact that I’d be back shortly to pick him up.
He was all smiles when I went back a couple of hours later.
I’m so glad I could be with Riley on his special day at school, even though it was a slightly delayed celebration. Big thanks to Ms. Amanda for letting me join in the fun.
Happy, happy birthday, my sweet big boy!
