Rory continued to rock kindergarten in the second quarter. He’s halfway done!
In ELA, they learned about sentences, short /i/, /n/, /k/, short /o/, /d/, /h/, and short /e/ sounds, adjectives, and pronouns. They also learned 7 more sight words (and, to, go, do, you, my, are), had 8 more spelling tests, and continued with their reading.
In math, they learned about numbers up to 100, measurement, classifying objects, position, two-dimensional shapes, and patterns.
In religion, they learned about forgiveness, prayer, All Saint’s Day, the rosary, Thanksgiving, mass, and Advent.
They did a number of fun STEM activities and science experiments this quarter. They worked together at the Invention Station to make different structures using paper towel and toilet paper rolls. Rory’s group made a tank! They also experimented with surface tension using water and objects, created mini catapults, and made oobleck. And they designed and tested their own Mayflower, used different tools to dig dinosaurs out of blocks of ice, made gingerbread houses out of blocks and gummies, built Christmas trees out of cups and pom poms, and created structures with gumdrops and toothpicks.
They also did lots of fun art projects throughout the quarter. I helped with their haunted Halloween project in October and their Christmas picture cube in December. And now we know that Rory is thankful for his house, toys, food, and family. And how he would make the Grinch grin is to “buy him new Christmas lights on the house and a picture of him.”
They didn’t actually participate in the Saints Play Football Experience on October 16 like the big kids, but they did get to meet offensive tackle Terron Armstead!
They celebrated the 50th day of school on October 19 and had a fun SCR Week the last week of October.
They practiced hard for their fair dance and did a great job on stage at the fair. And they had a fun pizza party to celebrate their fair booth win!
They took class pictures on November 8 and enjoyed Donuts with Dads on November 16. I helped organize the event and also served the many dads who came. Such a fun morning!
Rory won a Fun Buck in November and got to participate in Fun Buck Friday on November 30.
Their class elf showed up on December 3, and they named him Ollie. They had such fun adventures with him the rest of December!
Santa visited their classroom on December 5, and they discovered treats in their shoes on the 6th for the feast day of St. Nicholas. The whole school enjoyed a pajama day on December 11, and the kindergarteners went caroling around school on December 19.
They also had a guest pumpkin carver and a few mystery readers this quarter. And Rory continued to bring home very creative drawings.
With the exception of one note home about him talking too much, Rory’s behavior was very good this quarter.
Rory was assessed on his report card for identifying initial and final consonant sounds and short vowel sounds and the ability to blend sounds into words. He was also assessed on counting objects 11-30, recognizing those numerals, identifying number words, writing the numerals 0-20 in sequence, and counting to 100 by tens. He did very well in all of his assessments. He still needs to work on his handwriting and the ability to work carefully and neatly, but we’re so proud of him.
Bring on the rest of kindergarten!
