Once again, Riley made the Beta Honor Roll for the 2nd quarter. And again, he only got one B, still in handwriting. But this time he got first place for having the most AR points in his class: 38.4! SO proud of him.
In ELA they learned about common/proper nouns, concrete/abstract nouns, singular/plural nouns, collective nouns, nouns as subjects, and possessive nouns. They also discussed antonyms, similes, prefixes, and suffixes. And they learned about folktales, historical fiction, expository text, novels, and short stories. They also read Bunnincula and The One and Only Ivan together as a class. Finally, they learned about apostrophes, commas, and quotation marks.
In math, they continued to learn about multiplication and then moved on to division. Riley continually amazes us with how well he does in math.
In religion they learned about Abraham, the father of God’s people; the prophet Moses; God’s laws of love, the Ten Commandments; King David; and Advent. They also celebrated their class saint’s (St. Kateri) feast day.
They also celebrated their class mass this quarter. Riley sang in the choir.
In social studies they discussed our nation’s history (Native Americans, Columbus, 13 colonies, American Revolution, Constitution, Lewis and Clark, Civil War) and our nation’s government (three branches of government, elections, voting, Bill of Rights, Pledge of Allegiance). They also had to conduct an interview with someone who went through Hurricane Katrina. Riley chose to interview James.
Their second quarter projects included making a disguised turkey, creating an ornament out of recycled materials, and designing a poster for the “Keep Christ in Christmas” contest.
They had SCR Week at the end of October: ‘Merica Monday, Tourist Tuesday, Wacky Hat Wednesday, Thursday fair shirt day, and Friday Spirit Day. Riley won third place in his class’s Tacky Tourist contest and got a Fun Buck for it! (Fun Bucks are new this year. Recipients get a dress-down day the last Friday of the month and enjoy popcorn during lunch.)
Grades 3-7 got to attend the Saints Play Football Experience in the gym in mid-October. Such a fun morning for them. They also took class pictures this quarter, had a fun pep rally on Halloween Day, practiced for their last official fair dance, and enjoyed a school-wide pajama day.
And third grade participated in the annual Christmas choir/band concert, as well as completed two fun Christmas art projects.
They took their second quarter exams in ELA and in math right before they got out for Christmas break. It was very interesting to see the change in pre-exam behavior compared to the first quarter. Riley was very obviously nervous before his first exams but was not at all before his second. His attitude was totally and completely, “I got this.” And he did very well on both exams: 98 on math and 95 on ELA.
I cannot believe he’s more than halfway through his third grade year!

Wow.
This is awesome.
So, the green poster. Is that what his classmates think of him?
