Mardi Gras this year was bonkers, mostly because of the ever-changing weather. We saw it all: cold and rainy, calm and comfortable, warm and humid, completely soaking wet. But we made the most of it and had a really great Carnival season.
My first parade of 2018 was Nyx on Wednesday night. I went with Dana and Lynn, and we stood with Dana’s friend Emily at her private tailgate spot and raised stands on St. Charles next to Superior Grill. It was awesome. However, it was raining and freezing cold for a lot of the night. We all had rain boots and lots of layers on.
Druids rolled before Nyx, and we dealt with rain until just before they finished. Then there was a long wait for Nyx to get to us, during which we line danced in the street and finally warmed up for a bit. We found out the delay was because one of Nyx’s floats hit a tree that took out a power line. Oops.
Once the main event finally reached us, it rolled through pretty well. All of us scored purses and Dana brought lots of pretty stuff home to Claire. We left early though, because more rain started coming down. Successful night, though!
The next night, I drove by myself down to Lizzie and Doug’s spot at the Best Western on St. Charles and hung out with them for Chaos, Babylon, and Muses. Lizzie wasn’t feeling the greatest, but it was so good to spend time with her and Doug. And it was a gorgeous night!
Lizzie’s friend Mary glittered my lips (!!!), and we all educated a group of Mardi Gras virgins on the ins and outs of Carnival. Good times. I ended up going home with a really cool light-up leaf headpiece from Colleen and THREE glitter shoes, including a kingcake one from Candice. So awesome.
Friday night was Centurions in Metairie, so we took the boys and met up with friends from school in our usual spot. The weekend weather was forecasted to be really bad, so we were afraid this would be our only chance for the boys to see a parade this year. It sprinkled a little bit on us, but it was a pretty decent night, even if it wasn’t the best parade.
However, it turned out that our Carnival season wasn’t quite over yet. More to come!
