Since Riley’s birthday fell on a Saturday this year, Kenny and I were excited to spend the whole day doing fun things with our boys.
After breakfast, presents, and a bit of playtime, we got dressed and went down to Storyland. I luckily was able to talk him out of having his party there but I thought taking Riley there to play on his actual birthday was a great compromise.
However, the weather apparently did not fully support my compromise. After only a half hour of playing, the skies opened up. But we knew that going in, so we planned ahead and decided to go for it anyway. All four of us got absolutely soaked but we stayed and played for another hour, sloshing through puddles and having a grand time. It’s definitely something Kenny and I will remember fondly for a long time.
Once we dried off and changed clothes, we headed over to Gott Gourmet for lunch, the birthday boy’s request. He loved drinking his Barq’s root beer and eating his chicken tenders and French fries.
We went back home after lunch and put both boys into their beds for naps. When they woke up, it wasn’t too long before our family started to arrive to celebrate with the wonk potatoes. Since Riley’s birthday parties are being dominated more and more by school friends, I decided to have something separate and small at our house for the fam.
Riley got a special gift from Aunt E, Uncle Jeff, and Kate that he actually wore to his party the next day. He was so excited when he saw what it was: a Ripslinger shirt!
After Riley opened all of his gifts, we moved into the dining room to sing “Happy Birthday.” I made him a green cake (like the end of the year cupcakes I sent to school back in May) with vanilla frosting and colorful sprinkles on top. He really liked the ice cream but took maybe two bites of his cake and declared he’d rather play. Go figure.
And with that, he was officially four. His birthday party the next day was fantastic, and that recap is coming up next.
Happy happy birthday, my sweet Riley-bean!
