A Day with the Little One

Just like on Riley’s first birthday, Kenny took last Friday off so he and I could spend some time with our special birthday boy.

Once both boys were awake, we went into the kitchen to eat breakfast and give Rory his birthday present from us, an anywhere chair like his brother’s from Pottery Barn Kids.

What you can’t tell from the pictures is that I screwed up and ordered the regular sized chair, not realizing that I purchased the oversized chair for Riley back in 2011. Crap. Still not sure what we’re going to do about this. I suppose we’ll keep it for now, but I’m just afraid that Rory will eventually complain that his chair isn’t as big as his brother’s.

Kenny stayed at home with Rory while I took Riley to school and stopped by the grocery to get a few things for the party. He went down for his morning nap shortly after I got home. When he woke up, we all got dressed and went to meet Nola, Nopsi, Kel-Kel, and Kate for lunch at Velvet Cactus.

It was a gorgeous day, and we had a great time sitting outside on the patio. Rory practically ate his weight in smoked shredded pork and black beans, also tasting the chips and guacamole. And while Kate enjoyed Nopsi’s tea more than anything, I did get her to taste the pork, too. Which she loved. Winning.

Once we were done with lunch, Kenny and I decided to take Rory to the zoo until Riley was done with school. It was pretty crowded, but we had a nice time wandering around in the fresh air and bright sunshine.

After the zoo, we planned to meet Grandma and Riley back at the house for the start of a new tradition. Since Rory was born on National Pi Day, we thought it would be only fitting to celebrate his birthday with some pie. So we dropped by Café Luna on our way home from the zoo to pick up two mini pies from Nathan Winner, the Nola Pie Guy. We got peanut butter and key lime, and Nathan even gave us some fresh whipped cream to go with them. Oh, and Rory fell asleep in the car on the way home. Sweet sleepy Sprout.

We put a candle in one of the pies and sang to Rory back at home. He didn’t really know what to think. He didn’t have much of an interest in trying either pie, but I did manage to sneak a taste of the peanut butter into his mouth.

Grandma and Nola and Nopsi were also able to give Rory some of his birthday presents later that afternoon. He got a couple of trucks especially for him, although Riley has already tried to claim them.

After presents and a bit of outside time, we fed the boys dinner, gave them a bath, and then I put the birthday boy to bed. I so enjoyed cuddling with him for a little while.

Nola and Nopsi then came back over to stay with both boys while Kenny and I went out to a NORC dinner at Apolline, along with Uncle Jeff, Aunt E, and Cub, who was in town for the party on Sunday. We toasted Rory and marveled at just how lucky we are to have two sweet boys in our lives.

Happy, happy birthday, Sweetness. I hope you enjoyed your special day!
