In ELA, Riley learned about types of verbs, principal verb parts, subject-verb agreement, and adverbs. He also learned about rhyme scheme, metaphors and similes, point of view, genre, and context clues. In math, he learned about adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions, representing and interpreting data on line plots, and decimals. (He also happened to get a 100 A+ on his third quarter math exam. Amazing!) In science, he learned about the structures and functions of living things and about wave patterns and information transfer. They also did a project on landforms and a few fun experiments. In social studies, he learned about the southeast and the midwest regions of the United States (including the states and their capitals!).
In ELA, Rory learned about past and future tense verbs, is/are, was/were, has/have, see/saw, go/do, contractions, and long vowel sounds. They also learned about inflectional -ed and -ing endings, CVCe syllables, ABC order, prefixes, and open syllables. And they learned about commas in a series and in dates, apostrophes in contractions, capitalization and end punctuation, capitalizing proper nouns and titles of books. They also had weekly spelling tests. In math, he learned about solving and completing addition and subtraction equations, counting on by ones and by tens, and addition facts through number 8.
First grade marked the start of the Carnival season with kingcake on King's Day, January 6, and they celebrated the 90th day of school on January 10. (Rory dressed up like Joey Lawrence and looked adorable.)
The second quarter recognition mass was held on January 15. Riley was recognized for Alpha Honor Roll, and Rory was surprised with the Merit Award for his class. First grade did a fun Mardi Gras art project on February 5 and exchanged valentines on February 14.

The whole school celebrated Catholic Schools Week January 27-31. Monday was Crazy Hat Day, Tuesday was a Super Bowl inspired canned food drive, Wednesday was mass and "Move It" day (they had random dance parties throughout the day when music was played over the loudspeaker!), Thursday was Catholic School t-shirt day and a donut treat, and Friday was a special assembly honoring student service projects.
Rory's class mass was February 12. Both of my boys sang in the choir, and the firsties all took home a handmade rosary bracelet blessed by Father Luis. They also had a pizza party, and each got a special note from one student in the other first grade class. Brennan did Rory's, and it was so sweet.
Global Awareness Week was February 17-21. They focused on the Bahamas this year. Both boys did a little research on the islands and learned about their people, practices, and culture. They had a Bahamas flag colors dress down day, received a special popsicle treat from the Co-Op, and ended the week with a Mardi Gras spirit day and the SCR PK4 parade.
The whole school celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2, their first day back at school after Mardi Gras vacation. Rory's class dressed up according to the book Wacky Wednesday and read books with third grade, while Riley's class dressed up in honor of Fox in Socks and read books to PK3. So fun!
On their very last day at school, March 13, Rory brought in a special treat for all of his classmates in honor of his birthday the next day.
Who would have known that was the last time they would all be together for this school year? Who would have known their entire fourth quarter would be completed at home, with their mom as their teacher? Who would have known the world would be forever changed?
One thing is for certain: I'm incredibly proud of my boys.
More recaps coming soon, including our homeschool adventures!

What an amazing nine weeks, for both boys. There is always so much going on at that school. And yes, who could have predicted their school year would end that way? I can't wait to read he home-school recap. You did an outstanding job, PC.
These pictures make me sad but are all the more amazing now. Who knows when we will be able to return to the wonder, the magic, the camaraderie of childhood?
That limerick ... so creative! Love reading about their school achievements and how much they are learning. So hard to believe Riley is old enough already for some of the stuff he is being taught.
