When we went to Grandma and Grandpa’s church in Mandeville to have Riley take his first communion, he saw a promo for their Vacation Bible School. The theme was “Shipwrecked,” and he really liked the big ship on the graphic.
Long story short, Grandma signed him up and agreed to keep him in Mandeville for the whole week. She even volunteered to help out at VBS, so they were on campus together every morning that week from 9-12. I think that might have helped his state of mind, considering he didn’t know anyone else there. He didn’t see a lot of her, but at least he knew she was close.
Riley and his group of 11 or so other newly minted third graders rotated through 4 stations each day: Games, Imagination Station, Bible Stories, and Tropical Treats. He absolutely LOVED it and did not want to come home. He actually cried before they left the house on the last day because he knew it was basically over. Sweet boy.
They held a performance on Thursday night for their families to see, so Kenny and Rory drove up there. (I was at Waitress with Nopsi.) Riley got to show them all around and he even performed on stage to one of the songs they had been listening to and learning about all week long. He did great!
I went to pick him up on Friday afternoon and he told me all about his super fun week. Not only did he love VBS, but he and Grandma and Grandpa did some other awesome things. They did the Mentos and Coke experiment, made a huge gummy out of Sprite and 8 packs of gelatin (which he tried when he was back home….and said it did not end up tasting very good), and had plenty of Lego battles.
He talked about practically nothing else but his awesome and fun week for a few days once he was home, but the rest of us were really glad to have him back. We missed his wonky self!
Grandma, I hope you know what you’ve gotten yourself into now. And next year, Rory can go too!
