Before I start, I have to clue y’all in on Riley’s Halloween costume this year. He decided months ago that he wanted to be the Boss Monster from his current favorite series, The Notebook of Doom.
However, since we haven’t actually seen the Boss Monster yet (he/she won’t be revealed until the 13th book is released at the end of December), we weren’t sure how to transform Riley into said monster. Riley, however, had a clear picture in his head and outlined what he wanted us to do. And, lo and behold, we made it happen.
Kenny did most of the work and did an awesome job. We reused Riley’s hooded snake cape from last year and added two extra eyes on stalks, a couple more fangs, and a horn on top, all per Riley’s instructions. Kenny used extra green snakeskin fabric I had luckily kept to make the tentacles and sleeves that he attached to one of Riley’s purple t-shirts. Oh, and he sewed plastic suction cups onto all four of the “arms.” Then we took a bendable Mardi Gras spear, painted it gray, and attached pink “goo” made out of felt to the tip. Kenny also made an elastic and velcro belt to hold the tail around Riley’s waist. This costume was totally a hodgepodge and no one knew what he was except us, but he was very happy with it and he looked great.
Okay, back to the story for today. Second graders at SCR have a very special year-long service project. They partner with the Sunrise Senior Living Center and do fun activities with some of their residents. Their first major one was trick-or-treating at the “grandparents’” apartments on Wednesday, October 25. I got to go too!
They got dressed in their costumes at school and then took a bus to Sunrise. I went to help Riley get into his homemade, multi-piece creation, so I got to see all of the kids getting really excited about their first field trip of the year. Even Ms. Paulin and Ms. Cobb dressed up: as peanut butter and jelly!
They arrived at Sunrise and gathered in the lobby to break up into groups. I am Photography Mom again this year, so I wandered around taking pictures of all of the kids. The residents were sitting outside their doors with buckets full of candy to pass out. It was so festive in there, with lots of decorations. And some of the residents even dressed up a bit too: I saw lots of Halloween hats and headbands and shirts and even a costume or two. So fun!
When the kids had all made a full round, they reassembled in the lobby to sort through their loot. And of course to sample some of it. Ms. Paulin and Ms. Cobb told them they could each have three pieces of candy, and of course Riley tried to negotiate for more.
It was a really fun trip, and I’m so glad I got to go. They go back sometime in December to sing Christmas carols and then again in the spring to make blankets. Such a wonderful partnership between the young and the old; I hope Riley realizes someday how special this year is for him.
Boo Bash recap coming up next!

Looks like a day those folks will remember for a long time. And Riley's costume rocks. I can't wait to see how close he is to the character in the books.
