School Days: 50th Day of School

Where the heck did October go? We are always SO busy during this month; there’s lots going on at school. And I know I haven’t done a recap of the boys’ first nine weeks, but I’m putting it off because it’s such a big undertaking. We’ll see if it happens this year.

Usually only kindergarten celebrates the 50th day of school, but this year the whole school got to mark the occasion. This year is St. Clement’s 50th of Catholic education, so everyone participated in the 50th day and dressed up like kids from the fifties. The boys looked so cute in their jeans and white shirts with their slicked back hair. And they even had their own black combs to carry in their back pockets!

One of the best parts of the morning, though, was seeing Riley’s first grade teacher, Mrs. Smith, who came back in town for a surprise visit. All of the kids LOVED seeing her again!

Everyone had a really fun 50th day. All of the students got donut treats from Co-Op and had a big party in the gym with hula hoop and limbo contests. So awesome!

Video Monday: Puddle Splashing

An unusually late hurricane popped up in the Gulf the first weekend of October, prompting Claire’s Girl Scout troop to cancel their camping trip to the farm and Oktoberfest to cancel the second day of their 2017 festival. We ended up not getting a ton of rain (the storm went east of us), but the winds were pretty crazy, so we walked up to the levee on Saturday afternoon to check things out.

And of course the boys found a big puddle to splash in on our way home.

A week later, the boys were outside playing happily in the sandbox…..

…..until the skies opened up. In tremendous fashion. All four of us had such a great time playing in the rain and getting soaked to the skin. So fun!

Oktoberfest and Pumpkin Patch 2017

We were able to go to Oktoberfest twice this year, and in its new location along Bayou St. John. We attended the second and third Fridays. Nopsi came out with us the first night, and while it was really hot, we all had a good time.

This was the first year I did the 2-mile NOTC Oktoberfest race, and it may be my last. The course was really dark and the fest was super crowded with all of the runners afterward. Plus it took away valuable beer sampling time!

Our second time at the fest was much more pleasant: cooler temps and less crowded. Uncle Jeff and Aunt E brought Kate and Luke out, and Jay, Katie, and Dylan ended up being there too. We had a really great night, despite Riley knocking over Kenny’s practically full beer. Oops. But I got to do the beer stein holding contest again!

In between our festing, Dana, Erin, and I met at the St. Augustine pumpkin patch after school one day to pick some fruit out. It was warm, Rory had an epic meltdown, and Riley wanted to take every fourth pumpkin home. Good times.
