Cub Scout Pinewood Derby

The annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was held the morning of Saturday, March 16 in the SCR gym. The boys and Kenny worked really hard on their cars, all the way up until late the night before the competition. They chose very different designs, but both were very happy with the way they turned out. Riley's car was Team Oni (Lego), and Rory's car was Team Serpent Raiders (Treasure X).

Unlike the regatta, I was able to attend the derby. We got there pretty early to weigh the boys' cars, which had to be 5 ounces or under. Kenny had to remove lots of extra weight from both cars, and even had to drill out portions of Riley's to get it to the right weight. Crazy.

Each car raced 8 times against three others. Riley and Rory each won a few of their heats, and even got to race against each other once. Neither one placed in their respective dens, but they enjoyed the event. And they already have ideas on how to change their cars for next year!

I'm so proud of the work the boys each put into their car. They did great for their first time!

They have a few big Scout outings coming up before the end of the year, including another camping trip and an overnight on the USS Alabama. Then their first official year of Scouts will be finished!
