The L Word

No, I’m not talking about love.

And I don’t mean lions. Or lollipops. Or lemons. Or llamas. Or even LSU.

I’m referring to Legos. They have completely invaded our house and are firmly establishing their dominance. They are all Riley wants to play with these days. He got 4 or 5 different sets for Christmas, in addition to the bucket of loose bricks that Santa brought him.

They are the first things he asked for the morning after Christmas. Kenny set him up at the dining room table so he could spread out and have lots of work space. And also so Rory couldn’t grab the pieces and scatter them all over the downstairs. (Because he totally would have.)

However, in anticipation of all of the new Legos we knew Riley would be getting for Christmas, Kenny and I got ahead of the game. We asked the guy that did the two built-in bookcases in our master bedroom to make Riley his very own dedicated Lego table. We decided it would live in a corner of his bedroom, so it was built to fit in that particular space. It even has a little lip all around the top so the pieces stay on the table rather than getting knocked to the floor. Smart.

The table was delivered a few days before Christmas. Kenny decided to stain and seal it himself, and he got to work the night of Boxing Day. He applied two coats of stain and two coats of polyurethane, finishing up and letting it dry overnight on the first Friday of 2015.

We moved Riley’s new table into his room the next morning. I helped him clear off everything he had spread out on the sofa table in the breakfast area and on the table in the dining room, and we moved it all upstairs. He was a bit confused at first since he was used to building with Legos downstairs. But Kenny and I figured having the table in his room would be best in the long run. That decision also gave me my two tables back. Hallelujah.

Immediately after we got everything situated, Riley started building. He stopped long enough for me to take a picture of how excited he was but then he got right back to it.

When he gets home from school in the afternoons, after he has a snack of course, he usually wants to go right upstairs and build.

Rory helps by carrying the empty boxes back and forth between the table and Riley’s bed. A completely important unnecessary job.

To fill the table’s two shelves, Kenny and I decided to get some tiered storage tubs that will hold lots and lots of Legos. They also have tops with handles so he can carry them to another spot in the house if he wants to. The tubs aren’t very full yet but they will be. Oh, they will be.

Riley is slowly filling up the space on the top of his new table. He’s really into the “City” line of sets, and that’s what he’s been building lately. However, he is also increasing the amount of random things his mind can conjure up. I love watching his creativity come out when he builds.

It’s a good thing, too. I have a feeling Legos will be a staple in our household for a long, long time.

So awesome. What a lucky little boy. I meant to ask you last week, where did you find those plastic bins for storage?

Simply amazing. I LOVE watching his mind work and listening to his explanations about what every piece is and does.
